Ping Pong is a venue which epitomises London’s love of blended culture, uniting Britain’s love of after work drinks and eating out with the kind of décor and service experience that you might expect in a far flung destination. In this case, Ping Pong combines London culture with that of Chinese tradition – serving dim sum and other Chinese delicacies within the confines of its city centre location.
And bringing that to life for the benefit of the brand and its customers meant finding ways of transforming the venue into an immersive and authentic Chinese restaurant – something which we did with a very simple colour palette, minimalist design scheme, and a few carefully selected details which hint at the cultures being blended together.
As soon as you look at the images you will see how the main structure of the space has been finished in a black surface coat, with Chinese writing creating a chaotic but very design-focussed backdrop behind the bar and around some of the walls of the restaurant. In contrast, the tables are very simple and “zen” in terms of their design, and the chairs are covered in a warm yellow fabric which serves to soften the overall aesthetic and make the space feel more welcoming.
The red Chinese lantern style ceiling lamps offer the refined detail that really gives this restaurant its luxury feel, while the addition of large indoor plants once again grounds the space and makes it feel more welcoming than it would otherwise be. The light which is set into the surface of the bar also adds light to the space and also ensures that the bar becomes very much the focal point of the entire room – creating an effortless decorative element for guests to focus on, and once again tapping into that luxury experience from start to finish.
Creating a restaurant design which stands out amid the competition across London is difficult, however we used simple design elements to ensure that Ping Pong’s flawless menu has the backdrop and environment it deserves, both day and night.
